Lydia J. Carlis, PhD is Chief Eyemagination Officer for Eyemagination Enterprises, LLC, an education consulting and visual arts company in Washington, DC. Prior to forming Eyemagination Enterprises, Lydia worked with AppleTree Institute for Education Innovation for eight years, most recently as AppleTree’s Chief of Research & Innovation. In her role, Lydia oversaw design, development, implementation and validation of the award-winning Every Child Ready instructional model (a 2010 federal Investing in Innovation project), which includes a comprehensive two-year curriculum, student and classroom quality assessments, and blended professional learning. Before joining AppleTree in 2007, Lydia taught general education, special education, and English as second language to preschool through 7th graders in DC Public Schools and Hawaii Public Schools.
Lydia has developed early childhood, special education, ESL, and Response to Intervention training and resources for parents, teachers, and school leaders. She has taught graduate-level special education and ESL courses at Johns Hopkins University, The George Washington University, and University of Maryland College Park, where she received her PhD in special education. Lydia is a CLASS-certified observer for CLASS tools for classrooms serving toddlers through high school students, and a certified trainer for CLASS Toddler and CLASS PK. She also maintains current DC OSSE K-12 certification in special education, bilingual special education, and English as a second language. Lydia serves on the Education Committee for both Ingenuity Prep Public Charter School and DC International Public Charter School, and as the vice-chair for DC Bilingual Public Charter School’s board.
