Reopening Plans for the 2020-21 School Year
Updated July 23, 2020

Ingenuity Prep Families –

I hope this finds you and your families safe and healthy during this unprecedented time. We thank you for choosing Ingenuity Prep as the school community for your student(s).

Over the last several months our team has been extensively planning for the best way to safely reopen while ensuring a high-quality academic experience for students. In planning for re-opening we have also been taking into account a wide range of factors: family feedback from multiple surveys, health and safety requirements from the DC Department of Health, readiness of families, students, and staff to return to the school building, current health information on infection and spread, and the decisions of other schools in DC and the larger region.

Based on our best planning and consideration of those many factors, Ingenuity Prep will start the 2020-21 school year virtually for all students. We will regularly be assessing conditions to inform our planning and eventual return to in-person instruction in our school buildings as soon as possible. However, given all current factors, we believe it is likely that in-person instruction may not be possible until after we return from Winter Break.

As a result of this change, we are also moving the first day of school for students to August 31 to provide additional professional development time for our staff to prepare for this unique year.  Our updated SY20-21 Academic Calendar — with an indication of all changes from our previously released version — is available to view here.

Please know that we did not come to this decision lightly. We believe deeply in the value of our in-person experiences for our students. We know that much of our school is stronger and the educational experience is deeper when we have the opportunity to build community together with our students and that it’s not quite the same through a screen as it is when we are physically together. And while the environment in which we will be delivering our exceptional instruction, building deep and caring relationships, and developing strong classroom, Academy, and schoolwide community is different, our commitment and resolve to do the absolute best and most we can for our students is not diminished.

Though instruction will be fully virtual, we are still committed to identifying potential ways — at the school building — to enrich the virtual learning experience and support families, including providing in-person supervised virtual learning for targeted students (i.e. Learning Hubs), for relationship building opportunities, to address student wellness needs, and/or to conduct specialized assessments. Any in-person support or opportunities will be done following all health guidelines and we are spending time over the next few weeks evaluating what would be possible on this front.

Based on this information, we’re asking families take two actions at this time to help ensure a strong launch to SY20-21
Action #1

Complete the SY20-21 Reopening Family Survey

To better understand your family’s needs, we need you to complete a survey to gather information on the following:

  • Internet Access
  • Student Meals
  • Supplemental Programs While School Is All Virtual

Also included in the survey is the Technology Usage Agreement for this school year. For SY20-21 Ingenuity Prep will be providing all students with an Ingenuity Prep Chromebook that they should use for virtual instruction.  All families must complete the survey in order to pick-up their student(s) Chromebook(s) in August.

Action #2

Join us for a virtual Family Forum

Please join us for one of two virtual Family Forums we will be holding to talk more about our decision and plans for SY20-21 and address questions you may have. Those sessions will be held on Tuesday, July 28 from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and on Wednesday, July 29 from 5:00-6:00 p.m. See below for information on how to join the Family Forums.

These sessions are now complete. See below for a recording of the webinars and presentation materials:

This decision was very difficult for us to make and we know it has real impacts and may present challenges for you and your family. We greatly appreciate your flexibility, understanding, and commitment to the Ingenuity Prep community during this time of uncertainty that will be our new normal for some time. This page will become our hub for sharing updates and over the coming weeks we will post additional information here. We will alert you when any new information is added, but we encourage you to check back often to ensure you have all the information you need.

As always, our team here at Ingenuity Prep is here for you and your family to support in any way that we can. Please reach out to your child’s Academy Principal or our front desk at (202) 562-0391 if have any questions or concerns that we can address.

All my best,

Will Stoetzer, Co-Founder and CEO
